With complete trust, our Sister entrusted her earthly life to God and followed Him on the path to the new life, Sister M. Adelgera, n\u00e9e Maria Herzig, Hospital Sister of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Into your hands I entrust my spirit with complete trust. You have redeemed me, O faithful God.<\/em><\/p>\n(Psalm 31:6<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em>)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Our Sister, Maria Herzig, was born in Scheibe, in the Glatz region, the daughter of a farmer. In 1946, her family was expelled from Silesia and moved to Ostfriesland, where Maria spent her last years of schooling. She herself said that those years were the hardest of her life. Afterwards, she worked at Borrom\u00e4us Hospital in Leer, first in the kitchen and later as a nurse, until she responded to God’s call by entering our Congregation. She was deeply grateful to her parents for their loving care and protection during their flight and as they settled into life in Ostfriesland.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sister M. Adelgera also found this sense of security in God throughout her entire life; she served Him as a nun for seventy years, beginning in 1956.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her love for her homeland never faded. She enthusiastically participated in the regular meetings of the Glatz Association in Telgte, where she drew much strength for her faith and her life. Until the very end, she maintained her bonds with the people of Silesia, especially with her fellow Silesian Sisters. A few days before her death, she received a visit from Sister M. Maximiliana, the Polish Provincial Superior, and from Sister M. Alexandra, who were in M\u00fcnster for the International Archivists\u2019 Conference. During their visit, she inquired about all the Sisters and asked them to convey her special greetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sister M. Adelgera worked for many years in the intensive care unit at St. Bernhard Hospital in Kamp-Lintfort before being transferred to St. Heriburg House in M\u00fcnster in 1994 to care for her elderly fellow Sisters, and look after the chapel. Now she has been able to return her life into God\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We bid Sister M. Adelgera a grateful farewell. We remember her in our prayers and in the celebration of the Eucharist, and remain united with her in sisterly love. On Monday, July 13, 2026, we will bid farewell to Sister M. Adelgera during the Holy Eucharistic celebration at 2p.m. in the Motherhouse Church and then accompany her to her final resting place in the Sisters\u2019 Cemetery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
