Sister M. Liliane

Born: March 7, 1937
Entrance: August 12, 1960
Professed: May 3, 1963
Died: August 3, 2026

After a long life in which she always experienced God’s help, the good and merciful God called our Sister to Himself: Sister M. Liliane, née Maria Landwehr, Hospital Sister of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis.

God, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.

(Psalm Ref. 18:20-26)

Maria Landwehr was born the eldest of ten children on a farm in Bergstrup near Vechta. After finishing school, she worked on a farm in Kroge, where she became acquainted with the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, who lived nearby. She joined our Congregation at the age of 23. Her younger sister, Sister M. Leonharda, later joined her, but sadly passed away in 2002.

Sister M. Liliane was a dedicated nurse at hospitals in Münster, Meerbusch-Lank, and Freckenhorst. After serving as a superior in Seppenrade, she undertook home healthcare training at Arenberg, near Koblenz. She then used the skills she had acquired to care for sick in families in Ennigerloh and Marl-Hamm. She also took on pastoral and other duties in these communities. From 2005 to 2014, she worked at Greven Hospital, where she looked after the chapel and provided spiritual support to patients. Following the dissolution of the Greven convent, she devoted herself to caring for her elderly fellow Sisters at Maria Hilf Convent in Telgte. In 2020, she moved back to her hometown of Kroge as a senior Sister. She continued to support her fellow Sisters there until she fell seriously ill a few months ago. She passed away in the nursing unit of the St. Anna-Stift. Just as she had always cared for the sick and dying, her fellow Sisters and loved ones were with her around the clock during her final days.

To describe her life, Sister M. Liliane chose the psalm verse “God, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light“. It sustained her in good times and bad. May she now experience the fullness of God’s greatness!

We bid farewell to Sister M. Liliane with gratitude. We will remember her in our prayers and in the celebration of the Eucharist, and we will remain united with her in sisterly love. We will celebrate the Resurrection Mass for Sister M. Liliane on Friday, August 7, 2026, at 2.30 p.m. in the convent church in Kroge. Afterward, we will accompany her to her final resting place at the Kroge Forest Cemetery.
